The whole day I have been watching great tits trying to find something left amidst the snow in the withered hedges. They tap their beaks against the wood, in search of whoever lives there. Gould has finished playing, the classical-rational structure of Haydn evaporating into the silence after the last note. Somewhere in a Spanish garden stands a cactus, a green column with six seams, who if I were to cut him open would reveal white flesh, which would grow back again. No-one made him, he just grew. He did not come up with the plan himself, he already had it within him when I planted him, complete with “biological lines and forms of instinct”, as Szentkuthy sees his writing. Cactus or sonata, that is the question.
