Portrait of Miklós Szentkuthy on La Confession frivole
37
It has grown dark outside. Stars, Orion in his place among the other constellations, the blind hunter who rules north and south. So still, nothing is moving.
This is the day when the 27 will talk to the Greeks in Brussels, guilt and penance. Will we remain 28 or not? And in Minsk, three men and a woman are trying to avert further disaster. The whole day I have been watching great tits trying to find something left amidst the snow in the withered hedges. They tap their beaks against the wood, in search of whoever lives there. Gould has finished playing, the classical-rational structure of Haydn evaporating into the silence after the last note. Somewhere in a Spanish garden stands a cactus, a green column with six seams, who if I were to cut him open would reveal white flesh, which would grow back again. No-one made him, he just grew. He did not come up with the plan himself, he already had it within him when I planted him, complete with âbiological lines and forms of instinctâ, as Szentkuthy sees his writing. Cactus or sonata, that is the question.
